Guitar Parts

Knowing the parts of your guitar is necessary for you knowledge of the instrument, it will help you communicate with people about guitar better and also help you when doing lessons.

Body - The body is the main part of the guitar, it holds the pickups, bridge, strings, strap buttons and volume/tone controls. The body is usually made of wood, but not all the time, and comes in different colors and tones.

Strings - All standard guitars have 6 strings. These are the main part of what makes the noise. Each string is a different gauge or thickness. The thicker the string the deeper the sound the higher the string the higher the sound. The string are made of metal on most guitars and on classical guitars there made of nylon

Bridge - The is were the string join to the body of the guitar. There are a few different types of bridges like Tune-O-Matic, Floyd Rose, Hard tail, Bigsby or Tremolo.

Pickups -These are the main part in getting the sound amplified. They are magnetic and pick up the vibrations from the strings. They are located under the strings on the body.

Tremolo Inputs - Depending on the type of bridge you have, you mite have an input for a tremolo of whammy bar, not all bridge types take these. A Floyd Rose is defiantly a bridge that takes a whammy bar.

Strap buttons -These little buttons are found around the side of the guitar and are to hold your strap on when standing and playing.

Volume/Tone Controls - Are pretty self explanatory, they control the volume and the tone of the guitar. There found on the body of the guitar and the amount always varies from guitars..

Headstock - The headstock it at the top of the neck. It holds the tuning keys in place. Not all guitars have headstocks but most do.

Tuning Pegs - These pegs hold the string at the headstock end of the guitar and keep them nice and tight, you tune your guitar with the tuning keys also. The usually come up through the headstock and the actual turners come out the side of the headstock.

Fret board -The fret board is the top part of the neck that the frets sit on and were you place your fingers to play the notes. It contains frets and fret markers. Frets are the metal inserts on the guitar fret board that you press between to make different note. Fret Markers let you know what fret you’re on. On most guitars (except most classical guitars) the fret markers are found on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th, and 21st fret. The 12th fret has a different mark from the rest of the marks on the fret board, its because when you reach the 12 the notes start again.
